Getting started with 720 EVK

Hi, I’m trying to get started with a brand new Genio 720 EVK version P2V3. It has android pre-loaded on it and I’m trying to flash ubuntu to get acquainted with the tools. I’ve hit a wall however when trying to put the unit into DOWNLOAD mode.

When I press DOWNLOAD+RESET and release RESET I’m presented with a menu where I can boot normally, enter fastboot, or enter recovery mode. The docs I’ve read say this is sufficient to enter DOWNLOAD mode but the USB device isn’t appearing correctly. It seems like there might be another step I’m missing?

I’m running genio-flash v1.7.0a2 on linux in a VM on macos and the tool never finds the 0e8d:0003 USB device. I have 0e8d:201C , 0e8d:2000, 0e8d:0003, and 0403:6001 passed through to the VM and genio-config shows OK.

All DIPs are set to default except for J516 which I have configured for auto-power-on.

If there are docs I’ve failed to read please point me to them

Hello @James_Moore,

Although we develop in Mac, we usually use native Ubuntu machine for flashing.
I wonder if the issue might be because of the VM.

Do you happen to have access to a linux computer?

Thanks, I’m going to build a linux PC for this project soon so I will report back when I learn more.

Hey @James_Moore,

Sounds like a plan!

Not sure if you are going to be using Yocto for your project, but here is a wiki I wrote on how to create a custom meta-layer for the G510: Create custom Yocto meta layer for MediaTek G510 board - ProventusNova DeveloperWiki. I also recorded the whole thing for Youtube, you can watch it here. It’s kind of long, but packed with step by step details on how to do it.

I will be working on some more videos and tutorials.
If you have any ideas or questions, please let me know, I would love to learn about what teams are doing with these cool platforms.

Please keep me posted.

best regards,

Hi @James_Moore,

If you are trying to flash Ubuntu that information is below:

Currently Genio 720 doesn’t have Ubuntu support released. Ubuntu support comes after Yocto is finished which is currently in development. I would expect support for Ubuntu to be mid 2026.

Thanks,

Travis

Hello

I have some questions about Genio 720 that I’d like to ask you.

I also want to download Ubuntu to my development version, but according to the official website, we need boot firmware. It seems the official website doesn’t offer boot firmware for 720 yet.

I’d like to ask how I can obtain the boot firmware for 720.
