Unable to Flash Image Using Genio-Flash

Hi MediaTek Genio Community,

I am currently trying to flash a built Yocto build onto a custom board using Genio 520 (device name: aiot8391p2_64_bsp, shipped with Android 14). I have tested the flashing procedure from IoT Yocto documentation on devices across Windows and Ubuntu native devices, and they are both stuck on on genio-flash interface while the board reboot itself back to Android. I have confirmed that the machine setup: adb/fastboot/genio-tools are all using the correct version.

Could this problem be solved by using SP Flash Tool to format the device? The board by design is hardwired and only supports eMMC boot right now.

After DRAM calibration was completed, the following critical errors appeared: [MSDC] DAT CRC error (0x8000), Left:0/512 bytes, RXFIFO:0,dcrc:0x1 [MSDC] Abort: MSDC_FIFOCS=0h MSDC_PS=81ff0002h SDC_STS=4000e000h [MSDC] 32-bit PIO Read Error (2) MSDC stands for MediaTek SD/eMMC Controller. “DAT CRC error” indicates a Cyclic Redundancy Check error during data transfer, which usually means that data read from the storage device (eMMC or SD card) is corrupted or incorrectly transmitted. “PIO Read Error” further confirms the failure of the read operation.

Kernel Panic:

Immediately after the MSDC errors, the system triggered a sync_exception and panic, eventually leading to HALT: spinning forever.... This indicates that the system encountered severe errors while attempting to read critical boot data or operating system components from the eMMC, preventing it from proceeding.

Conclusion:

The DRAM initialization and calibration process appears to have been successful. The system encountered data read errors (CRC error and PIO read error) when attempting to access the eMMC storage device, and these errors were the direct cause of the subsequent system crash.

Since the board is a custom carrier board, the boot selector may not be exactly the same as the official EVK and I was told from the manufacturer that the board is hard wired to do eMMC boot.

It is worth noting that there are still boot selector pins on the board (BOOT_SEL0~3, each with a HIGH/LOW pin), and I have tested all possible combinations of the boot selectors. The output of the last few lines before reboot still points to eMMC failure and the log is exactly the same as the one above.

Update

I have tested an image flash after a format using SP Flash provided by the board manufacturer, and Genio-Flash was still stuck in <waiting for any device> while UART interface printed the same error messages.
